WA surf industry legend, Dave Kennedy (RIP), opened Star Surf + Skate in March 1980. The store was initially located in Forrest Place, but moved to its current Murray Street location four years later.
Through the 80s, Star Surf + Skate was known as WA’s first core surf shop. Under Kennedy’s guidance, Star catered to the specific surf hardware needs of local surfers who were neglected by existing retailers – shops which stocked surf brands but not an extensive range of essential equipment like surfboards, wetsuits and wax.
Star’s core credibility was (and still is) boosted by the footprint ex-Star employees and team riders have left on the WA surf industry. Many of the WA brand and sales managers at international labels such as like Rusty, Rip Curl, West and Billabong started out as sponsored surfers or sales assistants at Star.
This legacy continues today with Star sponsoring the cream of WA surf talent like Kerby Brown, Brad Norris and Ben Veicth. The next generation of surf stars is also being looked after with the likes of Jake Edwards, Pascal Hutchinson and Josh Cattlin currently representing Star at nation wide surfing events.
Star Skate was WA's first skate shop and current team riders Leuis Franich, Jesse Nelson and Noah Macpherson represent the Star brand well whenever they have a roll.
As a result of looking after WA’s core surfers and skaters, Star has been a consistent winner of ‘WA Surf Shop Of The Year’ awards, Star won the WA Surf Retailer of the Year Award for 2014 and 2012 and came runner-up in 2013. In 2013, Star Surf + Skate was also named in the top 5 ‘core’ surfboard stores in all of Australia.
Star was taken over by its current owners in 2006, following the tragic death of Dave Kennedy to leukaemia at age 51. Since the change in ownership, Star has flourished and grown to include two new locations – Mandurah and Hillarys – to complement its original, flagship Perth CBD store.
Star Surf + Skate’s initial (and ongoing) business model has always been skewed towards passionate surfers, skaters and bodyboarders. When Dave Kennedy started the business back in 1980, his vision was to create the “total surf shop” that stocked “everything that emanated surfdom”. DK’s legacy has endured today under the watchful eye of current director Ian Macpherson with all three Star stores devoting a major slice of their floor space to surf, skate and bodyboard hardware.
We hope everyone who visits Star experiences the friendliest and most knowledgable customer service in Australia and walks out of our stores stoked on their latest purchase from WA's board and beachwear specialists... Since 1980.
